Kylie Jenner's Fantasy Bra moment draws criticism from Victoria's Secret fans

Kylie Jenner wore Victoria's Secret's $50 million Fantasy Bra at the Oct. 18 fashion show, sparking criticism from fans who felt the iconic piece should have been reserved for longtime Angels.

Victoria's Secret fans have a lot to say about the return of the coveted Fantasy Bra. And the comments aren't too dreamy.

At this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on Sunday, Oct. 18, the iconic bra made a splashy return to the runway with a surprise wearer: Kylie Jenner. Online viewers and fans were not exactly thrilled about the choice of having Jenner wear a coveted piece that has historically been worn by longtime Angels.

Revealing the diamond design, created in partnership with luxury high jewelry brand Jacob & Co, Jenner strutted down the runway in the bra made up of 4,410 natural diamonds, bringing the total weight to 1,373.39 carats, with a singular 75.54-carat Natural Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond in the center. The blingy bra also came with a hefty price tag, with a total valuation of $50 million, making this dreamy design the most expensive Fantasy Bra of all time.

For her glitzy runway moment, Jenner styled the history-making piece with fluffy white wings and an all-white underwear set for a sparkling spectacle that made for one of the night's most talked-about and controversial moments.

While the KHY founder was also supported by her mom, Kris Jenner, and boyfriend, Timothée Chalamet, who were spotted cheering her on from the front row, many commenters online were not as approving.

"I have nothing against Kylie Jenner, but putting her in the Fantasy Bra instead of a career runway model was such a missed opportunity," one userwrote on Threads. "Victoria’s Secret already had the attention. What it needed was to restore the prestige of being an Angel."

Another user said: "The Fantasy Bra has always meant something special to VS fans like me. That’s why this decision feels disappointing. Who else feels the same way?"

Originally crafted in 1996 and first worn by Claudia Schiffer, the famed diamond bra was last created for the 2018 VS Fashion Show. Worn by Elsa Hosk that year, the "Dream Angels Fantasy Bra" was designed by Swarovski and encrusted with 21,000 diamonds.

Over the years, the iconic bra, which often comes with a $1 million-plus price tag, has been worn by famous Angels such as Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Karolina Kurkova, Miranda Kerr, Candice Swanepoel, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Jasmine Tookes.

Following Sunday's show, longtime fans of the brand argued that the Fantasy Bra's return should have been an opportunity for one of the OG Angels. In particular, fans highlighted Lima and Ambrosio, who were celebrating 21st and 20th show anniversaries, respectively.

One Threads user explained that Jenner walking in the show wasn't necessarily "the issue." It was more about seeing the "holy grail" of Victoria's Secret's products on an Angel, which is how the bra became iconic in the first place.

"Alessandra Ambrosio waited 15 years to get her first bra, THE ADRIANA LIMA 9 years, the Candice [Swanepoel] 7 years. It's like wearing the ultimate crown that made you AN ICON … so yeah I'm mad," the quote concluded.

On Instagram and TikTok, users left thoughts on Victoria's Secret posts featuring Jenner.

"The audience didn't get the show they deserved and the models didn't the recognition they deserved," one Instagram user commented on a backstage photo of Jenner wearing the bra.

Others also touted Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Barbara Palvin as OG Angels they would have loved to have seen wearing the bra.

"Kylie out of everyone??? Really... should've been an OG model," one commenter said, while another wrote, "You had Rosie, Candice or Barbara, no words."

One user even went as far as to bring up Kendall Jenner, saying that the older sister "would have been a better fit."

In a recent interview with Vogue, Adam Selman, chief creative officer at Victoria’s Secret, shed light on the brand's decision to pick Jenner for the Fantasy Bra honor.

Calling the reality star a “cultural powerhouse," Selman said, "Kylie really extends beyond fashion, beyond culture, beyond TV, beyond one singular thing. That’s the exact same thing that we do. Like, the show is so big, it’s true entertainment, and I think that she is a great catalyst for that. She’s really created her own culture, which – how many people can say that?”

Despite the criticism, Jenner took in the moment. Following the show, the Kylie Cosmetics founder shared a series of behind-the-scenes photos on her Instagram story. On one close-up photo of the diamond bra, she wrote, "Best day ever."

On Monday, Oct. 19, the star shared a roundup of photos and videos on her Instagram grid, including close-up clips of the sparkling bra, backstage photos of herself in the famous pink striped Victoria's Secret robe and additional snaps with Angels like Bella Hadid and Alex Consani.
