Coanchor Savannah Guthrie returned to the morning show on Monday, July 20, after her own brief hiatus, joined by "Today with Jenna & Sheinelle" cohost Sheinelle Jones. Guthrie noted Melvin was absent for a "little family vacation."

The time off comes after a person slipped past "Today" security and allegedly managed to confront the coanchor off-air on Thursday, July 16, allegedly calling him a racial slur, according to records reviewed by USA TODAY. There was "no altercation, and no one was injured" during the incident, per a "Today" show statement.
