Texas deputies investigate after ICE vehicle strikes, hospitalizes man

Harris County sheriff's deputies are investigating after a vehicle operated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents struck a man in the Houston area Saturday morning, authorities said.
ICE agents were pursuing a wanted suspect when the suspect and a passenger got out of their vehicle and ran, according to information shared by the Harris County Sheriff's Office during a press conference.
The incident happened around 7:20 a.m. on Clay Road, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
"Preliminary indications are that a vehicle operated by ICE authorities struck a man," the sheriff's office said in a post on X.
The man, a 48-year-old passenger, was struck as an ICE agent attempted to capture him, authorities said. He was taken to a local hospital, where he remained in ICE custody. Authorities believe he may have a broken leg.
Commissioner calls for transparency
Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones said she was horrified to learn about the incident and called on ICE to cooperate with investigators and release video evidence.
"ICE must cooperate fully with the Harris County Sheriff's Office and release all video evidence of this incident," Briones said in a statement. "We demand full transparency, accountability, and respect for the rule of law."
Briones also criticized the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies and said her prayers were with the man's family as authorities work to establish what happened.
USA TODAY reached out to ICE for comment and additional information about the incident.

According to the sheriff's office, ICE agents were pursuing a wanted suspect when the suspect drove westbound in the eastbound lane. The suspect and a passenger then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
ICE agents attempted to apprehend both people. In an attempt to capture the passenger, an ICE agent tried to box him in near a building, and the passenger was struck, authorities said.
Investigators have attempted to obtain video footage of the incident from a nearby building's camera, according to the sheriff's office.
