Macy's in January named 66 of the 150 stores it is planning to close as part of its revitalization plan, and some stores on the list appear to have already closed or be closing soon.
The retailer announced in February 2024 plans to shut down 150 "underproductive" Macy's store locations by 2026. The plan "is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth,' Macy's said in a press release in January 2025.
Macy's still plans to close a total of about 150 underproductive stores, while investing in its 350 current Macy’s locations, through the company's 2026 fiscal year, which ends Jan. 30, 2027, the company said in the press release.
The 66 stores named in January included locations in New York, Florida, Arizona and California, among others, and included some of the chains most iconic locations.
According to local outlets WPIX and News12 Brooklyn, the Macy's store in downtown Brooklyn closed last weekend after a nearly three-decade run in the location. WPIX reports that Macy's took over the building on Fulton Street in 1995 after it originally housed the first Abraham & Straus department store.
Additionally, another iconic store in New York, located on Long Island at Sunrise Mall, is also set to close its doors next month, according to Daily Mail, The Mirror US, and other local reports.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Macy's CEO and chairman Tony Spring said in a statement in January.
Macy's did not immediately respond to a USA TODAY request for comment on Thursday.
