A blanketing of several inches of snow greeted many Americans as they awoke the morning of Dec. 27 as a winter storm rolled through parts of the Northeast and New England.

In the Northeast, the storm leaves behind colder-than-usual temperatures, with another round of snowy and icy weather on the way, forecasters said.

Meanwhile, heavy snow and strong winds accompanied an atmospheric river over parts of California, leaving some mountainous locations with 4 feet or more of snow. The event also dumped inches of rain and caused flooding in other parts of the state.

How much snow fell during Northeast snow storm?

According to the National Weather Service, this is how much snow fell across parts of the Northeast in 24 hours:

  • Parish, New York: 12 inches

  • New Milford, Connecticut: 10.5 inches

  • Equinunk, Pennsylvania: 8 inches

  • Southampton, Massachusetts: 5.5 inches

  • Lyndhurst, New Jersey: 5 inches

  • Central Park, New York City: 4.3 inches

The total recorded in Central Park makes this the biggest winter storm of the season so far for New York City, and the highest amount of snow in a storm since Jan 28 to 29, 2022, when 8.3 inches fell, AccuWeather reported.

Aside from snow, the storm also brought more than one-third of an inch of ice across parts of western Maryland and Pennsylvania, according to AccuWeather.

California mountains see feet of snow amid atmospheric river

Heavy snow and strong winds accompanied an atmospheric river over parts of California, causing treacherous travel conditions over the Sierra Nevada and far northern California mountain ranges. On Christmas Eve and Christmas, vehicles got stuck near Castle Peak in the Sierra Nevada Mountains over Donner Summit, the California Highway Patrol said.
