What message did Cal display on the jumbotron after beating UNC?
How have off-field issues impacted UNC football's performance?
What key moments led to Cal's 21-18 win over UNC?
Things went from bad to worse for North Carolina football Friday night.
The Tar Heels and Bill Belichick looked like picking up their first Power Four win of the season as Nathan Leacock was headed toward the end zone and a UNC lead late in the fourth quarter. But a Cal defender punched the ball loose prior to the goal line and, POOF!, a chance at a morale-boosting, stabilizing win was gone.
UNC football has been the butt of plenty of jokes this season, from on the field performance to the circus off the field. And Cal wasn't going to pass up an opportunity to pile on. After the Golden Bears had all but secured their 21-18 win, a message on the jumbotron trolled the Tar Heels and their six-time Super Bowl winning coach.
"'I am fully committed to Cal Athletics and the program we are building here, why do you ask?' — Oski mascot"
"'Oski has our full support, no really, we mean it, why else would we make this statement?' — Cal executives"
Shots fired.
Cal's message was an homage to statements Belichick and UNC made on Oct. 8 as rumors swirled the former Patriots coach was thinking about looking for an escape hatch.
"I'm fully committed to UNC Football and the program we're building here," Belichick said in a post from North Carolina on X.
UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham added: "Coach Belichick has the full support of the Department of Athletics and University."
Cal, you're on the list!
