How to measure snowfall
The National Weather Service relies on volunteers to help calculate the total snowfall in a given area during winter storms.
The tools you need: The agency recommends using a piece of white-painted plywood measuring about 24 inches by 16 inches, called a snowboard, as well as a yardstick. If you don’t have a snowboard, find a spot about 20 to 30 feet away from the house in an unobstructed part of the yard. A wooden deck or picnic table works well.
How to measure: If you’re using a snowboard, place it on the ground ahead of the snowfall. Push your yardstick into the snow until it hits the snow board or ground. Record the measurement to the nearest tenth of an inch. If there are snow drifts, you may need to take multiple measurements and average them together.
