Michelle Obama honored her late mother with a custom Acne Studios skirt featuring a portrait of Marian Robinson at a reception for the Barack Obama Presidential Center, a look that moved Barack Obama to tears.
Michelle Obama is honoring her late mother in the most stylish way.
The former first lady joined her husband, former President Barack Obama, at a stakeholders reception for the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on Tuesday, June 16, just a few days before its Juneteenth weekend grand opening.
While addressing the audience at the event, Michelle showed off her unique skirt and top ensemble, which paid homage to her mother, Marian Robinson.
The custom Acne Studios look, based on Look 29 from the brand's fall/winter 2026 collection collaboration with photographer Paul Kooiker, featured a chocolate quarter-length sleeve top tucked into a belted, pencil skirt with a sepia-toned portrait of her late mother. "The Look" author topped off the personal outfit with a pair of brown pointed-toe pumps and dainty diamond earrings.
Having seen the skirt for the first time in person while onstage with his wife, Barack Obama, clearly moved by the meaningful design, began to tear up.
"He's really messed up," the former first lady told the audience. "I'm giving him some time because this beautiful skirt that my stylist Meredith Koop picked out, that is my favorite portrait of my mom. He didn't know it existed until just a few minutes ago."
She continued, "I've had a few weeks to settle down in the beauty of this skirt, but it's messing him up for good reason. But Marian would have been so proud."
Michelle Obama left the White House almost 10 years ago. The abuse keeps coming
Robinson died at the age of 86 on May 31, 2024. Throughout her mother's life, Michelle Obama has been known to pay tribute to her on social media. Back in 2019, the Grammy winner celebrated her mother's birthday with a meaningful Facebook postfeaturing her "favorite portrait" of her mother – the original inspiration of the Acne Studios skirt design.
"Whenever I see this picture, and the look in my mother's eyes, I wonder if she has any idea what's coming in the decades ahead: Real love and real loss, children and grandchildren who'd keep her on her toes, a wild ride to places she'd only read about or seen on television," Michelle Obama wrote. "But I also see something else in those eyes, something that guided me every day from the moment I was born—her unflappable belief that whatever came her way, she'd manage it. And because she'd manage, we all would, too. Happy birthday, Mom. I love you!"

Michelle's bold fashion statement at the public outing comes days after uproar over disparaging comments made about the former first lady at the White House's recent UFC fight event. But not dwelling on the negative, the Obamas have set their sights on Thursday's presidential center opening featuring appearances from stars like Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Steve Wonder, Jennifer Hudson and more.
