Nancy Pelosi in hospital after injury during Europe trip

WASHINGTON - Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is in the hospital after sustaining an injury during travel in Luxembourg, according to a spokesperson for her office.

"Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals," Ian Krager, a spokesman for the California Democratic lawmaker, wrote in a statement. "She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history."

Pelosi had been traveling with a congressional delegation abroad on a trip marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

Pelosi, 84, has been in Congress since 1987. She made history in 2002 when she was elected as Democratic minority leader, becoming the first woman to lead a major party in Congress. She broke barriers again in 2007 as the first woman to be House speaker, second in line for the presidency.

After 20 years as the top House Democrat, Pelosi stepped away from leadership while continuing to represent her San Francisco district in Congress. Her stepping down made way for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., to succeed her as House minority leader.

Pelosi won reelection this November and is set to be sworn in next month for her 20th term in office.

Her injury and treatment comes days after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., 82, suffered a sprained wrist and cuts to his face after falling at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday.
