For Adam Sandler, seeing "Saturday Night Live" move on without him was heartbreaking.
The comedian, 59, reflected on his 1995 exit from "SNL" during a recent conversation with Timothée Chalamet for Vanity Fair. Sandler revealed that after he was fired from the sketch show, it was too painful for him to watch it, at least for a while.
"When I left the show, the first year, I couldn't watch it," he said. "I couldn't watch it. It just breaks your heart. I guess it's like when you play sports, and all of a sudden, you leave, and you see the game keeps going. You go, 'Oh, they didn't need me, man.' It breaks your heart a little bit."
Sandler was a cast member on "SNL" from 1990 to 1995. In the years since his departure, the "Happy Gilmore" star has said he did not leave willingly, but was fired. In 2019, he came back to host "SNL" and sang a comedic song about being booted off the show.
"Between seasons, I heard a nasty rumor that I was getting the sack. I tried to call Lorne Michaels, but he never called me back," he sang before quickly adding, "I'm joking. He called me."
"I was fired, I was fired, NBC said that I was done," Sandler also sang. "Then I made over $4 billion at the box office, so I guess you could say I won."
On "The Howard Stern Show" in 2019, Sandler said he was "hurt" when he was fired from "SNL" because he "didn't know what else I was going to do," but he noted it wasn't creator Lorne Michaels' decision.

"The NBC head dude, I know he didn't like our gang, me and [Chris] Farley," Sandler said.
But the "Grown Ups" star reflected that if he hadn't been fired, he may have "never left" because he's "not good at saying goodbye."
Sandler has been receiving Oscar buzz for his role as the manager of George Clooney's title character in the new Netflix drama "Jay Kelly."During his career conversation with Chalamet, which took place last month at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, the "Dune" star told Sandler he is "one of the best" actors alive and "should have a golden man in your hand."
